Some of them. It wasn't a widespread problem that all early consoles were effected by.
But the problem would show over a period of time with green/pink pixelated artifacts displaying on screen while playing some of the more intensive games. This was attributed to damage done to the motherboard (by heat) in consoles that were regularly left on the amber 24 connect mode in which the console is silent (no fan) and consuming about 10w of power.
Again, it was far from millions of consoles being effected, but this was the explanation given.
Quick test would be do a touch test (if you don't have an IR surface temp thermometer) on the "bottom" side while the console is off (red, about 1w) and again on standby (amber, 10w). It should be warmer.
