I think it's the other way around. More people have started gaming. From all these new people who started out with the PS1 or 2 or Wii, many see gaming as an extra hobby they do besides the sports.
But, you are right that gamers in general have gotten more active. I do believe that's also because gaming is more of an accepted phenomona - you can go to a sports club now, talk about games and no one looks at you funny.
