Why? Because it's fun. It's a nice little escape, just like any other entertainment from theatre to video games.
Drugs are also useful as a social lubricant. Nothing like a couple drinks to lower inhibitions and draw us introverts out of our shells. It's easier to have a good time when you aren't worried about embarrassing yourself. And if you do humiliate yourself, it's easy to scapegoat the drug. I swear some people lose more inhibitions from the psychological excuse than they do from the chemistry.
There are other reasons, of course. I once knew a guy who started smoking just because he was jealous of the 5 minute breaks smokers got while us pink-lungs got to keep working. Seems like a petty reason to court lung cancer.
