Regarding the release date, there are three possibilities here...

1- They're going to rush out a few very simple games for it to release in 2010, with a development cycle of less than 1 year.

2- They have quality software on track for a spring 2010 release, but didn't show it.

3- It will come later than spring 2010.

Alternative 1 seems foolish... they need well made games to generate enthusiasm for the new controller.

Alternative 2 doesn't make much sense... E3 is not a game developers conference, it's a wide-audience conference... showing tech demos and not games goes against the spirit of the conference.

In conclusion, alternative 3 seems the most likely...

I like your logic, however I wonder if the benefits MS arguably saw getting to market first with 360 (with rushed HW and a small library) will colour Sony's view - i.e. they will rush to market rather than wait.

From all the evidence, and given the EyeToy is in place and they seem to have the basic SW/SDK in place or nearly there, if they get the 'wands' sorted out smartish they could probably launch in the stated timeframe with a minigame title or titles - some Wii Sports rip off stuff, maybe some simple painting, doodling fun and a gladiator / combat title, etc.

I suspect if they do the initial SW memory requirements, etc. will not be ideal but will be fine to support some initial titles, and as with XMB they'll work on the SW to get the footprint down and follow with bigger titles at a later stage.

Logically, though, they should probably go for option 3 as you outlined it.

Still, guessing is fun, isn't it?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
