i don't think the ps3 was poorly designed, i actually think it was too-well designed.. they future proofed it so much to prepare for an extended hardware cycle so their initial cost curve was too high and they can't bring it down their line-width costs down fast enough to offset the price cuts which are happening faster than they anticipated. developers are just starting to really utilize the expensive graphics chips that sne has been paying for, so its not like they can scale back on their specs now. i don't foresee a next gen for a while (sne trying to duplicate lifecycle of ps2), its just a race to get cost curves down faster than the prices..
