The OP's source article also makes no sense when the article it links shows a poor PS3 tie rate -- but sources a Gamasutra analysis that shows the PS3 having pulled ahead of the Wii's tie rate in the US (6.5 vs. 6.2) as of March 2009.
(For the record, the Wii numbers include Wii Play but not Wii Sports. The explanation for the PS3 pulling ahead is strong Wii hardware sales and poor PS3 hardware sales).
As for attach ratios -- fewer consoles means probably menas less casual users (in general), so more game-buyers. The increase in the TIE rate supports this concept.
