I'm thinking about rebuying rome total war on steam so I can get the Alexander expansion pack.

This is a game that is similar to the total war series. it's based around the napoleanic era, like Empire: total war, but it's older so it should run on your comp if you have RTW.
Then there is the europa universalis series. No combat, mostly just diplomacy and empire managing.
