As far as I know in America the peace sign is either way (knuckles facing you or the other person) but it's more common (at least from what i've seen) to have your palm facing you (so that would be an insult to you but just peace to me :) - but really either way would probably be interpreted as the peace sign to the average american (I would and probably will once I forget about this thread)

 

and yes the middle finger sticking up on its own (not practical to do it backwards but that would qualify as well) is considered a very foul gesture in american society (synonymous or even worse than the use of the word fuck) and is censored (just like most curse words and nudity) from national and most cable/satellite television.

Oh seen its like that here for both the finger and V finger. They both are censored off the tv. In the UK when using the peace sign be sure to have you palm outwards or you may get you fingers broke lmao
