Well, as properly noted in the OP, given the simple fact of how most multiplatform titles look the same, and how PS3 exclusives can look fantastic, the fault here clearly lies with the underlying engine and the developer rather than the PS3.
It does look a lot worse on PS3, no questions asked, and and their is plenty of evidence it shouldn't. It looks playable, and in the end the graphics don't affect the gameplay, script, etc. but it is quite the surprise these days to see such a marked difference - and it's pretty ironic of course given the relative closeness of the title brand to the Sony brand.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
