Um... sorry, grand-master flesh. I didn't know you, o great overseer of all things related to smut, was going to be in this discussion. But I'll try to answer your doubts.
You hunt for it online because when you first get your computer, you fire up the browser and you google "free porn" - try it now. (Edit: Do you have a special "Windows XXXP" version installed that comes with loads of free links on your desktop?)
None of that stuff is "free". You get 10-second teasers. Ok, maybe 20-second teasers.
Once you search that stuff, you click on a link. That is fed to your browser's cache, your browser's history, and if you are using XP, any image you download will be placed conviently on your recent documents as well as reside in your computer's cache. You might be geeky enough to know how to protect yourself, but you are in a decidedly small minority. Fact is, most people have no clue as to how to clean out their computers (I do this as a "side hobby" where I live, helping clueless people, men and women, clean out their computers of their "evidence" - and getting to know everyone just that little bit better).
Then that person's wife jumps on the PC, opens the browser, and starts typing "www.google.com", but as soon as she types in "www.g" she gets a filtered list of
www.giantcocks.com
www.greathomosex.com
www.gayparade.com
Of course, said wife would be none too happy to know about said husband's sexual inclinations.
Besides, finding mainstream stuff online is, despite its hurdles, is still way easier than to find really "specialized" stuff (I won't go into details here but if you like PM me and I bet I can give you 10 "specializations" that will take you, o Great Vizir of Porn, more headaches to find than arguing about this in the first place).
