You'd be better off with a gaming PC, much more and better games, and there's Steam which beats Xbox Live in nearly every comparable way.

hehe... except RE5 and Gears 2 which he said he enjoyed are not on PC. Not yet anyways.

Also, he will spoend the money he is saving to buy an xbox on a videocard alone.

GPUs are cheaper than ever, you can build a gaming PC for only $400 that will crush PS3 and Xbox 360 visually. For less than $100 you can buy great high end GPUs nowadays. And it will be even cheaper for him if he intends to wait until fall or next year like he said.

You are downplaying the price and overhyping performance

I bought an ATI 4850 this holiday season for boxing day and it was 200 bucks. This was quite a decent price at the time.

I have an athlon X2 6400, 2 GB ram, 100 dollar mobo. All in all the system cost me ~500 to build and guess what...it doesn't "crush" the 360.

To play Crysis with a good frame rate it looks worse than games like Gears 2 and FarCry on 360. Other games like Left 4 Dead and Fear 2 look better on PC but not by much. I play both on the same 67 inch 1080p TV...

PC gaming is great, but it will never replace the simple, cheap and accessible gaming that consoles offer.
