That's far from universal, that's just BAD anime. There's plenty of western-made entertainment plagued with crappy overacting as well, but you wouldn't generalize an entire countries entertainment output based on a handfull of series which are derided by most anyway. 95% of anime isn't worth stealing but thats the same with any form of media, movies, Tv, books and videogames, the vast majority is and always has been pure crap. If you don't like the art style then I guess that's just personal preference, but 'overly emotional reactions' are loathed and despised by the anime community as well. I can't stand most anime either but I still consider myself a fan, because given its range and diversity if you do a little more digging and give it a fair chance there's bound to be something to your liking.
