The hardware engineers likely dropped the size and maHs of the battery to match the reduced power consumption of the smaller backlight/LCD panel and no UMD drive.
When the final specs are out I expect to see the maH rating significantly lower than the standard PSP battery.
So about the only thing SCE didn't shrink down with the Go was the price.
I guarantee we'll be seeing aftermarket clip on batteries for it though.
