All my life I was used to calculating measurements in ms, cms, etc. And just like you I would laugh at any other measurement technique, but when I started to attend college here in the United States 3 years ago I got used to "imperial measurements" for the sake of school. Now I'm being mocked! unacceptable! 
but seriously, just as I learned first hand, don't judge what you may not understand.
