No problem. Torillian's got the basics down, but don't think of it as an MMO, think of it as being like a Final Fantasy where you determine the class. You'll be much more effective if everyone fills specific roles, even though all of them will end up with full License Boards.
Think of it like this: you need one person to absorb hits, one person to heal/cast status magic, and one person to deal damage.
Early on, everyone should have shields, but as time goes on only the person who absorbs hits should have a shield. THe person who absorbs hits is there to make sure other members don't get hurt, rather than deal damage themselves, so you need to give them a weak weapon that raises their Evade by a lot (I think the Gladius was best for this). In the end this character should be very hard to hit.
The person who heals should also act as your primary buffer - they're the ones who cast Hastega, Protectga, Shellga, and so on.
Status magic is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT in FFXII. FFIVDS is the only other Final Fantasy where status magic is this important.
The person who deals damage needs the most powerful weapon you have (it will probably be two-handed, which is why they can't have a shield), then you hit them with Haste, Berserk, and Bravery - they will be doing so much damage so fast that it will melt your face off.
You can set the person who takes hits to cast Berserk, and even give them some healing spells if you want.
Past that it's just a matter of arranging the gambits for your damage absorber and your healer.
That will get you through pretty much every fight in the game, especially if you keep some equipment with elemental immunities.
