They can and will only cut the price with a significant hardware redesign that saves considerably on production costs (PSThree) or alternately to clear out inventory in front of said revised product release, similar to the original 60GB "sale" prior to its replacement by the original 80GB model.
So yes, Sony can absolutely afford a price drop given a significant reduction in production cost.
