Why do people keep doing this? This is just not true, please stop spreading PC FUD.
You can get a very nice PC for under $1000 including the cost of a monitor and windows if you actually need them. But most people already have a monitor and a copy of windows, so really you can get in at under $800 very easily. And if you plan accordingly you leave yourself lots of room for cheaper upgrades in the future.
I would be happy to help anyone pick out parts who thinks it costs more than that to build a solid Gaming PC.
