It's a very similar idea, you had to balance on the board to ski or surf.

It worked different than you say, basically it supported left to right and forward and backwards movement (and thus diagonal as well like a joystick).
The original Amiga team sometimes used it to Meditate (and balance on it) during breaks while designing the Amiga computer.
