I notice Valve have just made public statement on this - so I guess they both noticed and felt a response was due.
Basically they're saying the circumstances around L4D2 are exceptional and that, because the new ideas, etc. were so strong that they felt it warranted a new title vs an expansion or DLC. At least that's how I skimmed it.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
