I used to think that God was a manifestation of the collective conscious of all humankind stemming from the innate feelings we have as humans as to what is right and what is wrong.
There have been a number of tremendously brilliant people over time that do believe in a God. One of them was Einstein. There are other intellectuals that argue god can be mathematically proven through transcendental logic but that logic is somewhat flawed.
The universe itself is amazingly complex and there are so many things in it that defy evolutional theories. Much of science "has always been and will always be". The problem with all of this is that it got here somehow. The laws of physics didn't evolve from something or spontaneously "arrive".
Even still, there are bigger questions surrounding things such as the (accepted as pretty much fact) Big Bang Theory. How did an object containing the entire mass of the universe come to exist as a single entity? What set off the sudden "big bang"? The Universe is said to be continually expanding. Where is the end of it? More importantly, what is it expanding INTO?
I've studied quantum physics and the more you study, the more you realize how very, very little we know about our universe right down below the atomic level. We have so many physical laws that are counter what quantum physics tells us that those laws really should be reclassified as theories as they do describe the outcomes accurately, but there are other possibilities.
If we as human beings can't even figure out the universe we live in and find the answers to such questions, how could we possibly argue the existence or non-existence of a God? It is beyond our imagination to conceive it...
And finally, I'll add this: Every now and then, I see a girl walk by... stunningly beautiful -- stopping traffic wherever she goes... And I think to myself... THAT doesn't happen by accident... :)
