Kratos attacked the island and city of Rhodes, and not to challenge Zeus, for no reason, but because he was doing his job as the God of War and helping the conquest of Spartans (not to say that Kratos should have knew that the gods dissaproved and considered them, but at this point he didn't care about the gods, due to them not freeing him of his pains in GOW I, and being used like a tool in Chains).
You hear about Sparta being destroyed after you mortally wound the "mysterious enemy" (the captain from Sparta)
Not to say Kratos is justified or a very sympathethic character. However you do feel some sympathy towards him, as well as some anger, or rather, pity for his tragic flaws that have haunted him from the very beginning. (Abandoning his family for power, and now that he has become all powerful he cannot get them back. His inability to change the past. Being used by the Gods both Ares and the rest in Olympus, and his anger at how fate shaped his life and how they even can't do anything to stop his pain, suffering, and anger (nor him).
Kratos needs to either accept his sins and fate, and move on, but that itself is tough and arguably impossible. How do you move on from your own sins, especially when they're even physically symbolized (ashes on skin). How can you stop becoming a warrior, death itself, a god of war when you cannot even disarm yourself (Blades of Chaos/Athena).
I hope that if the game ends optimisticly, those 2 symbols will come off of him, and he will be freed, and perhaps he peacefully dies with his wife and child in Hades, maybe after killing the unsympathic gods and freeing everyone from their control of fate.
