PS3 will not be discontinued unless sales go down by a decent margin. I do not foresee that happening. What could happen though, is the lack of momentum of the ps4 continues into the ps4 like the downward trend of the n64 went to the gamecube. If this happened, and Sony continued its hardware at a loss software as a gain philosophy the PS brand may go away (something Nintendo avoids due to always having profitable hardware). Since the PS do not have any first party names that quite reach the magnitude of Mario this would be difficult is sales dropped to Gamecube.
So basically, they have to not only keep screwing up this gen (which I thought they were getting away from, but the psp go has convinced me they may not have learned the lesson) but keep the downward momentum. This is unlikely but not impossible.
