"Looks good enough" and "Easy to code to" are two things the industry will code to, in order to get product out the door. Considering the sheer complexity of creating games today, companies need shortcuts, or they end up with products that are like Duke Nukem Forever.

The Wii embodies "Looks good enough" and "Easy to code to" also. I would also say, unless you are in the business, faced with making tough choices, it is hard to whine about this. It is SERIOUSLY hard to whine about it. There is also increasingly diminishing returns in this area. Why would you spend MONTHS to get a marginally better look for something?

By the way, what "hurting the industry"?  Apparently sales numbers indicate people aren't that concerned about graphics.  Look at the Wii, for example, for this.  People also need to stop being such graphic whores. SERIOUSLY here, stop.  What matters is a game plays well, and looks "good enough:.
