So in other words it is not a big deal because:

  1. There are no gamers who didn't own a PS2 last generation
  2. There are no new gamers this generation
  3. The PS2 was indestructable and will never fail
  4. No Gamers will want to trade in their PS2 to get a decent discount on the PS3
  5. Every gamer has an infinite ammount of space under their TV
  6. Backwards compatibility is not a selling feature to parrents because they're not interested in a massive library of low cost games for their children
  7. Every gamers has played every interesting game for the PS2

A large portion of these gamers will not want to abandon their current library of games and if they have to buy a PS2 to play them regardless of the next-generation system they choose to buy it makes it far easier to transition from the Playstation brand.

Basically, I wouldn't be surprised if 50% to 75% of PS2 owners bought a PS2 (instead of the competition) because they needed to replace their Playstation and they decided they "Might Aswell" pay the extra $75 to $100 and get a PS2 ...
