Because so few people are willing and able to do that, so they have absolutely no incentive to give a crap about you wanting to do it yourself. Because the ability to change the HDD without reading a manual or using a screwdriver set you may not have is far more valuable to a majority of people so an Xbox 360 60GB HDD upgrade is worth more than being able to do it yourself and Microsoft profits from that, just as Nintendo profits from the fact that the Wii is more than the sum of its parts.

Yes because giving the consumer a choice instead of handcuffing them and profitting from it is a bad thing.   Right, why didnt I think of that.

Its simple economics. If 20 different companies made the Wii, the price of the Wii would be the cost to manufacture the Wii + 5% overall margins. The Wii itself would probably cost no more than $125. However the Wii is more than the sum of its parts and Nintendo has a monopoly, only they can make the Wii. Sony gave you the option to upgrade the HDD in the PS3, they failed to make it easy however. The minority that they cater to are so irrelevant, you as an individual with your ability to upgrade the PS3s HDD are irrelevant next to the sheer number of people who cannot or will not. No amount of bitching is going to change that fact.
