Meh.
1. We don't really know what plans Valve have yet. They're past masters at building and maintaining communities and it may be that the two games are melded together in some way, ensuring that the original game doesn't become obsolete.
2. Even if L4D1 becomes obsolete, I've still had far more hours of enjoyment out of it than just about any other game in the last couple of years. We still might get the extra content anyway, but if not, it was well worth the £27 I paid for it.
