The timeframe will help it quite a bit because what the timeframe means is that the game will be out in Japan exclusively on PS3 about 6 months before it hits the Western countries. Building up an audience of 3 to 5 million players for the game in Japan before it is released it the West probably bringing the PS3's install base in Japan up to 7.5 to 8 million before FFXIV is released in the West, then when it comes to the West it will sell about 2 or 3 million copies on PS3 and about 1.5 million at most on 360.
Good strategy Square has going. Make their Japanese fans happy by releasing these games first and on a Japanese console in Japan while benefitting from combined PS3 and 360 sales in the West.
