Of course:
- Nobody expected it (except for the nuts who just want to see Metroid or the ones who just want to make crazy prediction so they can say HA! in the off chance they called it)
- It's a complete revisioning of the series
- It's made by a difference developer than the traditional Retro
- It's made by a developer with a great reputation
- It's made by a developer who doesn't traditionally work on Wii games
- It had a kick ass trailer
- It had gameplay (or what looks like gameplay) and it looked like teh stuff we've always wanted to do with Samus
- It came right after a very low point in the keynote which made it wake everybody up and say holy shit.
Everything about that announcement was just right and just plain huge and it makes sense since that's what they ended the show with. I consider SMG2 and the New Super Mario Bros Wii announcements as just announcements but the Metroid one was pretty major.
As I said, it was on the low end of the megaton announcement scale but it I think it was still a megaton.
