I think the art style is the problem- it was just very plain looking and lacks the charm/personality of LBP.
That said, if it's fun, ships with a full game, and a fully flushed out level editor it could do well.
Add in some downloadable Sony characters/items/power ups/stickers/backgrounds and it would be 1000% better received.
