My experience is almost diametrically opposite as far as that goes. The first two games I played for the NES Super Mario Bros. 3 and Kung Fu. Super Mario Bros. 3 (likely among my top 3 favorite Mario games ever) and the original would come later with SMB-2 coming last. Just never had the appeal of the other two.
As for the Mario party games, I can agree to that. If you don't (+) SMB-2 any further than 5/6, I won't (-) it any further.
