I was thinking of that as well. Not to mention that most FF fans weren´t eager to pay subscriptions for FFXI and weren´t too happy with the look and races of the game. FFXI had a different demographic than the typical FF. Mostly PC people that never played FF before or haven´t since the SNES/PSone times.
FFXI had like 2m subscribers on its peak. It´s more than 6 years since it´s release and still has a steady amount of 500k subscribers making it on the top subscription-based MMOs. Most likely it will be the same for FFXIV.
