Sega got trapped into that same situation, to actually a worse degree then Sony is in now. Sony is going to have to eventually cut ties to the PS2, so they can migrate people over to the PS3. However, without backwards compatibility, they can't. The PSP Go vs the PSP has issues of software distribution. The release a new portable unit that has the same specs as a less expensive system on the market, but unable to play the games currently on the market. Their hope is digital distribution will be their answer, and their hope it is. For the PS2, HOPEFULLY they can do a decent emulation of software of the PS2 on the PS3, so they can get out of the PS2 business, and come out with a thin PS3 to replace the PS2.
If there is yet another trend in the market that comes in, Sony could be hamstrung here.
