Well what do you know, it's releasing simultaneously on PS3 and PC so looks like your argument is completely blown out of the water.

Not necessarily my friend. Did you skip my thoughts in what has helped make WoW so succesful? I can guarantee you that FFXIV will not have t he same requirements that WoW does limiting a HUGE chunk of people that play WoW. Or do you believe that WoW's success was thanks to hardcore players? I can guarantee you that a very small niche people would upgrade to play this. Now its only hope is the PS3 userbase and again, how many people are willing to shed monthly fees? I'm sure it won't be as many as the total  userbase that FFXI has

FFXI's requirements weren't that hefty and I don't expect FFIV's to be that hefty.  I had a shitty PC back in the day and I could play FFXI just fun, the only thing you need is the good internet connection.

Yes, they will be greater than that of WoW's but that's because WoW is, what, five years old?

Actually WoW requirements were still low back when it came out. I was able to play it just fine in a $500 PC. How old the game is makes no difference really if you penetrated the right market at the right time.

I never said it wasn't, and just since you think $500 is a good price a wide audience, you can build a good gaming PC that can run any new game today for $500.

Since when does an MMO need 1-2 million subscribers? Unless things have changed radically in the past five years, a few hundred grand is plenty...

Yes they have! Again, people seem to be ignoring the fact that WoW set the standard as to what is successful in MMORPG and what isn't. In the quote I s howed Square considered a userbase of 200k below expectations. 500k is solid enough to make a small profit, but let's be realistic, these companies want to be Blizzard and want what WoW has done for them. I think now its all about let's see what will be their PC requirements and we'll know for s ure if its bound to shrink its based (and I dare to say the requirements will be quite hefty so it will not reach great success in the PC market).

So because one game sells well every game must sell as well as that one or be a failure?

Well fuck, I guess CoD4 is the only successful FPS and Gears is the only successful TPS.  [Insert the top game for every other genre here]
