You're right, it was poorly designed; but I think the recent fixes have gone a long way to address the problems. Make sure you get a system made after May, though (which shouldn't be too hard, since the vast majority of older consoles should be gone with the recent sales spkes).
I used to not feel totally confident with the machines ability to not overheat on me, but since I got a new console (gave old one to my brother), I haven't had one single problem. You're right though, MS is paying big time for thier mistakes originally in design.
