MGS was originally going to be developed for some other system as Metal Gear 3 but that system failed hard and they switched to the PS1 and a 3d game. Kojima decided to go with MGS instead of MG3 because of the switch from 2d plain figures to "SOLID" 3D character models and environments.

There's no real reason for him to remove the the SOLID part from the name since it's not about Solid Snake... it's just about how the game has changed from 2d to 3d... and I'm pretty sure MGS:R will be a 3d game...
