The reason isn't because the cars are easier to drive in-game. It's because they know it's a VIDEO GAME, they drive more aggressive than how they drive in real cars. It doesn't cost anything if you brake late and spun out in-game but it might be really expensive in real life.

That was what the pro racers said in the article for the faster in-game lap time.
