I prefer direct quotes like:

"In the U.S. we have already met with all the major studios," Chatani said. "They pretty much love the PSP and the quality of the UMD. They are also happy because it's not cannibalizing their existing business. It's an incremental purchase and poses very little risk to their existing business."

Which does not in any way address the question of the thread, which is "So, is the UMD a failure?".

It underlines they were really just pushing this as an extra and IMO that makes sense as the PSP and UMD are competent enough to be used for movies. A bit like the Amiga CD32 game console was competent enough to play VCDs (so why not allow this?), but was not really intended for this purpose as primary use. Nomatter what some Commodore PR folk many have stated.

Sony intended the PSP to be a multi-media device, for this allowing movies on UMD made sense. Just like today it makes sense to allow cost cutting movie downloads.

By itself it might.  For someone like you starting from the point of "I must cast Sony in the best light" you will then proceed to look for supporting info.  The proper way to do this is look at the question and then gather multiple points of information and apply it, and let the chips fall where they may and try to come up with a fair conclusion.  In 2004 Sony was looking to line up multiple vendor support and "make UMD the de facto compact storage media for the next generation of SD-quality video" according to their CEO. source:  http://tinyurl.com/ox3sd8

Your poor excuse for this, that only PR folks where you like what they said we should listen to, and other executives or PR folks where they said something contrary to your theory you discount as "some PR folk" that should be ignored.  Just because you want it to only match you Sony lovefest theory.

So, anyway, that tells us, at least in terms of their 2004 hopes it appears they failed.  Now maybe we can find points to directly dispute this.  But your quote does not do that.  And jeez man, can you give us links??  You do that often making people google and then we find its often because you are quoting out of context.
