Ups:

  • Project Natal was interesting. Quite a bit of potential for some genres, little for others, but more importantly, it can open windows to create new genres.
  • Shadow Complex looked great. Very little XBLA support was shown, but this title thoroughly impressed me.
  • MGS: Rising. 360 scored a MGS game, good for the 360 userbase.
  • Beatles: Rock Band was simply amazing. Fantastic tracks and the appearances of both McCartney and Starr made for a nice touch.
  • Forza 3 looked really good. I especially liked the footage from inside the cockpit. The social connections made through painting and what not inflated the presentation a bit, but not near enough to mar my impression.
  • Left 4 Dead 2. I love the first one, and honestly would have preferred a new Half-Life over a sequel so soon, but who am I to complain about a sequel to one of the greatest shooters in recent years.
  • Release dates! Many of these games are coming sooner than I had anticipated.

Downs

  • Felt throughout the entire conference that every game mentioned involved shooting other people. Kind of depressing, really.
  • Underwhelmed by both Splinter Cell and Alan Wake. Splinter Cell, while very fluid, I felt that much of the game was being played on its own. I dunno, maybe that'll change once I actually try it. I also thought that the non-stealth action seemed mediocre at best. Alan Wake just didn't interest me. Felt bland.
  • Social networking. If I want to use Facebook or Twitter, my time would be spent much more efficiently on a computer, I'd imagine. Last.fm, I couldn't care less about, but if it's free, I'll take it.
  • Not many new, interesting games were announced. Sure there was a new Halo, but I mean, we're still already waiting on one! Crack Down 2, Forza 3 and MGS Rising were also announced, but I thought they lacked diversity.
  • The 1080P movie no-download thing... Kind of skeptical of this. I'd imagine it'd have to be streamed and that'd be terrible for most people, myself included.

Overall, very good E3 showing by MS but left much to be desired. 8/10.

For dinner, while watching this conference, I had baked taquitos with sour cream and bbq sauce for dip. To wash this tasty meal down, I had Ginger Ale.

Taquitos with sour cream and bbq sauce for dip accompanied with Ginger Ale - 7/10.

What were your Ups and Downs of the MS conference and, more importantly, what did you have for dinner?
