Hype means nothing if it doesn't follow through. Lair had massive hype but it wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be. Hype means very little unless it lives up to it. That is why the Wii is doing well, it has lived up to its own hype. |
Living up to the hype isn't that important, actually. As long as the hype is massive and draws in new people, the overall quality of the product is irrelevant. Lair was never hugely hyped game. It never had the overall hype that games such as Mario Galaxy, Halo, and Smash brothers have. Furthermore, the games hype came mostly from a small number of people, thus limiting the overall hype the product actually had. Metal Gear Solid 4, for example, is an incredibly hype game that supposed to be a triple A tittle. However, if the game turns out to be very good tittle but not great title, it will not live up to the hype, yet it will still sell very well. New! Super Mario Bros. is a perfect example of a game not living up to it's hype. It didn't matter, though, as the game went on to sell at an incredible level. Hype is the key to selling a product.
