No, it's the other way around. With only one console, there is no competition and there is no motivation to make us better consoles and better games.


What are you talking about?  The NES had plenty of fantastic games.  As did the Game Boy Advance, despite having no real competition.

No motivation for better consoles?  I point you, sir, to Blu-Ray.  Last I checked, everyone was perfectly happy developing for DVD exclusively.

Nintendo has to compete for success in a dying industry, even if there was no real console competition. As for the GBA, it was good, but it could have been a lot better. The DS is a perfect example of how competition has helped a lot.
