Duke Nukem 3D was probably the least technologically advanced FPS that was successful. At the time it came out, almost everything about its tech had been done before by Dark Forces and others. It competed against Quake and Descent for crying out loud. It did have a lot of fun with the tech it had, but it was far from a groundbreaking game. In my mind, the best FPS ever is the first Half Life. The game that perfected the genre, and was so memorable, I can still recall the scripted events today. From the intro up to the point where you teleported to Xen, that game was pure genius.
