Okay, so I installed Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II again today for my coming flights and boredom in the hotel room and here's the experience:

  • KotoR installed fine, it just took sometime between 20-30 minutes
  • Had to fiddle with 4 discs and still always have to have the play disc in the disc drive when I want to play
  • Patching wasn't a big deal
  • KotoR II had...issues.
  • First time trying to install, I took about 20 minutes getting to the fourth disc and it errored and had to quit the install
  • Restarted the install, got past the fourth disc in about 30 minutes and then it errored again when I had to put in the first disc again.
  • Restarted the install again and it installed successfully about 30 minutes later.
  • Tried to patch the game but the auto patcher failed so I had to go to the website, find the correct patch, download it, and manually install it.
  • It has 4 discs but only have to have the one disc in drive while playing (no big deal, just mentioning)
  • In order to play the game in windowed mode I had to search the internet how to run the games in windowed mode and then edit the ini file
  • I tried to run the game and I got errors because it thinks my video drivers are out of date and it thinks I have the wrong OS because I have Vista (both games gave me the same error)
  • I went to the nVidia site and updated my drivers, restarted, and tried again and it still gave me an error telling me I had the wrong OS and my video card drivers are out of date BUT it at least let me play the game.
  • For both games I have to go through the controls and remap everything because I'm left handed and default controls just don't work for me (neither game supports controllers).

And what if I bought two random games for a console?

  • Insert the game into the console (have to do this every time for every game)
  • automatically download a patch if there is one
  • possible one time install that generally doesn't last longer than 8 minutes
  • Play the game

So no more than 20 minutes and I could have two PS3 or 360 games completely ready to play and more than two hours of headaches, waiting, and fiddling with settings for me to get two PC games ready to play.

And people wonder why I don't do much PC gaming.
