If I want this computer to serve me well for a few years, won't this be a bad thing to start off? Plus, if I won't be able to play Sims 3 on high settings, then what's the point of gaming on this thing? :P |
The fact is, you won't find a pre-built computer for $500 that will last for more than a few years. Get one built; it'll be MUCH better.
I'd go with TechReport's recent system guide, and exchange the dual-core for a much faster and future-proof quad-core for $50 more once you factor in the cheaper motherboard because it's AMD:
| Component | Item | Price |
| Processor | AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition | $139.99 |
| Motherboard | Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H | $89.99 |
| Memory | Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2-800 | $51.99 |
| Graphics | PowerColor Radeon HD 4850 512MB | $109.99 |
| Storage | Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB | $69.99 |
| Samsung SH-S223Q | $26.99 | |
| Audio | Integrated | $0 |
| Enclosure | Whatever | About $70? |
| Total | $558.93 |
You won't regret doing that. Order the parts from Newegg and get a local computer place or a friend to build it.
