1) Yes. 2) 1080p is twice the resolution of 720p. It makes a big difference for PC use (in my opinion). It is not as noticeable if you have a smaller 1080p display and you sit far away during movies. The smallest 1080p display I know of is 37 inches. You could tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 20 incher (if a 1080p display that size was produced) if you sat close enough. Smaller size won't make pixels disappear, but it will decrease the maximum distance you can sit yourself from the display and still notice the difference, unless you have superhuman eyesight. |
I just want to know if 1080p is a must-have. I have a 720p and my HDTV looks amazing. I'm just saying the setup for having a Blu-ray or HD DVD is: 1) you need a HDTV that can display 720p or 1080p 2) you need a HD DVD player or Blu-ray player Actually ignore that, my question is was the HD DVD and Blu-ray developed in mind to use 1080p or was it made to take advantage of HDTV's? |
It's not a must have. Almost all Blu-rays/HD-DVD's are authored in 1080p, but whether or not that makes a difference to you on a 720p native display all depends on you. 1080p is a must for me, but I'm REALLY on the picky side about some of my home theater stuff...
Buying a Samsung/Sony/etc. 1080p display is a waste of money - because they overcharge for their 1080p displays. 720p looks fine enough though, so unless you're picky about wanting to see every detail of 1080 content, you should be fine with what you're looking to buy now.
edit: (I use a Westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD - not perfect, but works pretty well for what I can afford at the moment)
