Excerpt from the interview-
Kojima: The symbol on the cap of the old man (he did not say Big Boss) will be important
A. Kojima: I think people will understand

Even though Kojima does not use "Big Boss" whilst referring to the character on screen, there is ample proof that the figure in question actually refers to the infamous Naked Snake. The key to the mystery as Kojima points out lies in the cap that the character holds. Now closer scrutiny of the cap reveals the words "Militaires Sans Frontières",which essentially translates in "Military without Boundaries". Now the color coding of this Old Man's cap is eerily similar to the one that was utilized by the 8th special forces group who were a part of the "Green Beret" program in real history. The time line within which this group was operational was between 1963-1972.

This time line and location actually holds ground within the context of events that took place during Portable ops(1970), where Gene takes over San Hieronymo Peninsula, the site of an abandoned Soviet missile silo in Colombia. This is also the place where Naked Snake comes into contact with Colonel Campbell who is a part of the green berets, the events of which later culminate into the formation of Foxhound. The words of "Militaires Sans Frontières" is based on real program Médecins Sans Frontières(doctors without borders). This non governmental organization came into being in the year 1970 during the events of Biafara Succession during the nigerian civil war. This curious semblance between the two events got us thinking further, and we found the map of the disputed state embroiled in conflict resembles the one seen on the cap of Big Boss, who will ultimately establish his own rebel unit against the insidious "Patriot Program", in a fictional area called Galzburg, 200 Kms from South Africa.

The logo if viewed carefully also contains a skull, which was the insignia of Big Boss during his reign at Outer Haven.
Even though Raiden has been confirmed to play a major role in the game, his appearance seems to be encapsulated within the events that concur between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4.
