Wasn't there no other choice unless your paragon level was high enough?

There is a side quests where you can recover his ancestors armor. It will earn you enough trust with him to get him to stand down. You need to talk to him between each mission to get the quest, either that or just stumble across his armor while exploring and give it to him. The latter is how it worked for me.
