I don't think any of these things are out of the realm of possibilty. Software companies are strapped for cash and MS may have decided now was the time to buy.
But I think more in line with MS current business strategy is the purchase of various high end exclusive games. MS seams to be moving towards 2nd party software teams where the companies keep their independence but develop mostly for MS.
Any of these developers high end games could be coming to the 360 as an exclusive for this year, I think that is what Major Nelson is trying to suggest.
