I think you should approach this game as a RPG mainly not an action game, because from what you say it looks like you wanted to play a shooter ( i hate that battle system) with RPG Elements. I personally only played around 10 hours due to exams, but that game is incredible nearly as good as KOTOR. Its just not a shooter.
Fighting its the only thing that really pisses me off in ME and Fallout 3, why did they make a shooters out of it..
