So, this makes you think...is the mystery ? chip not infact the GS chip, but is another chip that is attempting to replicate this chip? Again, why??? Surely this would cost manufacturing again etc.....

Obviously it is the GS chip, probably enhanced with some interface features for the PS3 bus adaption. In 1999, the GS chip was probably produced in approx. 1.1 micron technology. Now it is produced probably with 110 nm technology, which makes the die _a lot_ smaller and _a lot_ cheaper.
