If Lost Oddyssy works fine, try deleting your install and installing again. If that still doesn't work either find a buddy that has Mass Effect and see what happens with their disk or either rent it and see what happens.
Also, try clearing your cache. I forget how to do it but a little research on Google while you're reinstalling Mass Effect should make it easy to find.
If the picture is fine with the rented copy, just swap the copies. If it's still new, try exchanging it wherever you got it from.
